Like the Motorola RAZR, the Apple iPhone is set to revolutionise the mobile phone industry. It combines a mobile phone, a wide screen iPod with touch screen controls, mobile internet communications device, and a camera. All this has been put into a handset that weighs only 135g and measures 115mm x 61mm x 11.6mm.
The screen is a 3.5 inch multi touch colour screen (320 x 480 Pixels), and comes with a new Mac OS X based user interface which is based on the large multi touch colour display. Despite all the technology inside, the iPhone is still easy to use, and the high resolution makes the images crisp and clear.
The music player in the iPhone will not disappoint, coming in 4Gb or 8Gb memory options, there is plenty of room to store all your music, and like an iPod provides good quality sound and is easy to use.
Another great feature is the Safari internet browser, which although not as versatile as a laptop or desktop computer, still provides excellent access to the internet and with the multi touch screen the user can zoom in and out with ease. Also included is Google Maps, which looks amazing on such a large screen, and there is Wi-Fi support.
As for the camera, it is reasonable, but does not live up to some of the other features in the handset, it is only 2 megapixels which is lower than much of the competition on the market today, however there is an advanced photo management application to gain the perfect finish to every photo.
There are further drawbacks to the iPhone though, and it is only fair that they be highlighted to give a balanced review. A serious shortcoming of the iPhone is the lack of 3G capabilities, this means very high speed data transfer cannot be achieved, this is made even worse when considering almost every Smartphone on the market today has 3G.
In addition there is no MMS on the iPhone, and the Bluetooth technology is only available for use with headsets rather than file sharing, this makes sharing files a real issue.
Moreover, having such a large screen and so many applications, battery life can be an issue.
So to conclude, is the iPhone worth the money? That depends on your point of view, it does have many shortfalls, but you are paying for a superb user interface and a fashion icon. The responsiveness of the user interface and the wealth of effects mean using the iPhone an absolute pleasure in every respect. If however, you are more concerned with the specifications and the built in functions then there are better phones available.
